Tips on choosing a kennel or cattery

Finding a suitable boarding establishment to look after your pet while you're away can be more stressful for you than for your dog or cat. Follow our tips to ensure that your pet is happy and you can enjoy your holiday.

  • Ask for recommendation from friends, other pet owners or veterinary staff.
  • Start your search well in advance of your holiday or trip as the most popular kennels and catteries will book up weeks, or even months, ahead of holiday periods.
  • Aim to visit 2 or 3 establishments before making a decision on which will suit your pet best.
  • Try to select a premises that is licensed with the local authority as this will ensure that they meet basic standards.
  • When you visit the establishment some of the key things to note are:
    • Cleanliness, in particular of the sleeping area where your pet will be housed
    • Light and ventilation
    • Exercise areas and exercise routines
    • Noise
    • Watch how the staff interact with the pets being boarded
    • Are the kennels, cages and runs in good repair?
  • If necessary, ask whether they will allow you to provide your own preferred brand of pet food.
  • Are the necessary insurance certificates displayed, eg. Employers' liability.
  • Does the establishment require proof of vaccination?
  • What times can you drop off and collect your pet?
  • Are the staff friendly and welcoming?
